The 7 Types of ADHD by Dr. Daniel Amen: A Find Your Inner Peace Ltd Guide
How the seven Amen ADHD profiles show up in real life, and the ADHD coaching, nervous system regulation and bespoke programmes we offer for each one.

Dr. Daniel Amen, a psychiatrist and brain-imaging specialist, has spent decades arguing that ADHD is not one single condition. Through tens of thousands of SPECT brain scans at Amen Clinics, he identified what he describes as seven distinct types of ADHD, each with its own pattern of symptoms and its own treatment needs.
This model is not the same as the three DSM-5 presentations of ADHD (inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive and combined). Amen's seven-type framework is a clinical, brain-based approach that many people find helpful because it explains why two people with the same diagnosis can look and feel completely different.
You can read the original Amen Clinics overview on their Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD/ADHD) treatment page, and take their What Type of ADD Do You Have? quiz for a quick self-screen. Amen also offers a free PDF guide: Getting to know the 7 Types of ADD.
For the research behind the model, key published studies include:
- High-resolution brain SPECT imaging in ADHD (Annals of Clinical Psychiatry, 1997).
- SPECT Functional Neuroimaging Distinguishes Adult ADHD From Healthy Controls in Big Data Imaging Cohorts (Frontiers in Psychiatry, 2021).

At Find Your Inner Peace Ltd, we do not use brain scans. We use a nervous-system and strengths-based lens to work out which profile your child, teen or adult brain is closest to, and then build a practical plan around it. Here is how we think about each of Amen's seven types and what support we offer for each one.
1. Classic ADHD
What it looks like: inattentive, distractible, hyperactive, restless, impulsive. This is the profile most people picture when they hear ADHD. Concentration is hard, sitting still is harder, and the brain often acts before thinking.
How we support it:
- Movement-first regulation — short, structured physical bursts before any task that needs focus.
- Externalised structure — visual timers, written routines, body-doubling and checklists so attention is supported by the environment, not just willpower.
- ADHD coaching to build impulse pauses, task initiation and reward systems.
- Nervous system regulation tools to calm the racing motor that sits underneath the restlessness.
Programme match: ADHD coaching in the UK, our family and adult 1-1 pathways, and school support programmes.
2. Inattentive ADHD
What it looks like: distractible, poor concentration, disorganised, daydreamy, but not hyperactive. This type is often missed, especially in girls and women, because it is quiet rather than disruptive.
How we support it:
- Demand reduction — stripping tasks back to the smallest first step so the brain can start.
- Environmental scaffolding — clear containers, labelled spaces, visual prompts, and one-task-at-a-time work zones.
- Working memory supports — external note-taking, verbal repetition, and body-doubling.
- Bespoke 1-1 ADHD coaching focused on initiation, follow-through and self-compassion rather than shame.
Programme match: ADHD coaching for adults, higher education support and the Families Waiting Well programme.
3. Over-focused ADHD
What it looks like: trouble shifting attention, gets stuck on thoughts or tasks, argumentative, worrying, obsessiveness, inflexible. This profile is sometimes mistaken for anxiety or OCD because the brain locks onto something and cannot let go.
How we support it:
- Transition rituals — predictable, sensory cues that mark the end of one thing and the start of another.
- Cognitive flexibility tools — "plan B" practice, scaling problems, and language that loosens all-or-nothing thinking.
- Co-regulation from a calm, steady adult so the nervous system can shift gears.
- Anxiety management techniques that reduce the distress underneath the stuckness.
Programme match: 1-1 ADHD coaching and the neuro-regulation framework.
4. Temporal Lobe ADHD
What it looks like: inattentive, irritable, mood instability, learning or memory difficulties, sometimes quick to anger or confusion. Amen links this type to overactivity in the temporal lobes.
How we support it:
- Calm-before-correct parenting and coaching so the brain can process information without flooding.
- Memory-friendly strategies — repetition, multi-sensory learning, visual supports, and chunked instructions.
- Sensory regulation to reduce the irritability that builds from too much auditory, visual or social load.
- Trauma-informed support because mood instability and memory difficulties often overlap with past difficult experiences.
Programme match: Family support, trauma support and bespoke 1-1 nervous system regulation coaching.
5. Limbic ADHD
What it looks like: inattentive, low energy, moody, socially withdrawn, negative outlook, chronic low mood. Amen describes this as an ADHD profile with a significant limbic or emotional component.
How we support it:
- Behavioural activation — small, scheduled, achievable activities that rebuild momentum and energy.
- Warm, structured connection — regular check-ins, co-regulation, and social scaffolding that feels safe, not overwhelming.
- Morning and evening regulation routines to stabilise mood across the day.
- Compassion-based ADHD coaching that addresses the shame and hopelessness that often build up after years of undiagnosed struggle.
Programme match: Adult ADHD coaching, menopause and late-diagnosis support and the 6-month journey.
6. Ring of Fire ADHD
What it looks like: angry, irritable, moody, extremely sensitive to noise, light, touch or other people's emotions, sometimes oppositional or explosive. Amen describes this as a pattern of "over-arousal" across several brain areas.
How we support it:
- Sensory load mapping — working out what triggers overload and designing the environment around it.
- Predictability and decompression — clear expectations, recovery time, and safe spaces to reset.
- Emotion regulation tools — physiological sighs, grounding, temperature change, and pressure input.
- Family coaching so everyone understands the triggers and responds with calm consistency.
Programme match: Family support, school support, and our tool shop for sensory and regulation tools.
7. Anxious ADHD
What it looks like: inattentive, anxious, tense, physical stress symptoms (tight chest, stomach, fast heart rate), perfectionistic, easily overwhelmed. This profile combines ADHD with a highly activated stress response.
How we support it:
- Anxiety management as a core skill, not an afterthought — physiological sighs, grounding, vagal tone work, and pacing.
- Nervous system regulation to bring the body out of fight-or-flight before trying to focus.
- Gentle ADHD coaching that does not push productivity at the cost of overwhelm.
- Boundaries and recovery planning so the person can rest without guilt.
Programme match: ADHD coaching, anxiety-focused support, free guided meditation and the neuro-regulation framework.
Why the 7-type lens matters
Mainstream ADHD diagnosis often groups people into one of three broad categories. Amen's model suggests that ADHD is far more nuanced. A person with Ring of Fire ADHD needs very different daily strategies from a person with Inattentive ADHD. A child with Over-focused ADHD may look oppositional, when in fact they are stuck in a loop. An adult with Limbic ADHD may be told they are depressed, when the real issue is a long-undetected ADHD profile.
We do not diagnose. We do not scan brains. But we do use this kind of profiling to make sure our support actually fits the person in front of us. That is why our programmes are bespoke, not one-size-fits-all.
Our programmes for the 7 types
We have a range of programmes that map across Amen's framework, depending on the age, goals and situation:
- Waiting Well for families — support while you wait for assessment. Ideal for Classic, Inattentive, Over-focused and Ring of Fire profiles in children.
- Bespoke 1-1 ADHD coaching — tailored for adults, teens and children across all seven profiles.
- Family and parent coaching — for households with one or more neurodivergent members.
- School and higher education support — strategies for pupils, students and staff.
- Corporate and workplace ADHD support — for adults navigating work with an ADHD profile.
- Tool shop and sensory resources — practical regulation tools for Anxious, Ring of Fire and Over-focused profiles.
- 6-month journey — a deeper, structured programme for adults ready to rebuild energy, mood, boundaries and executive function.
Every programme starts with a conversation. We listen first, then recommend a plan based on the profile, not the label.
How to get started

You do not need a diagnosis to start. You just need to be curious about how your brain works.
Frequently asked questions
What are Dr. Daniel Amen's 7 types of ADHD?
Amen describes Classic, Inattentive, Over-focused, Temporal Lobe, Limbic, Ring of Fire and Anxious ADHD. Each is linked to a different pattern of brain activity. Read more on the Amen Clinics ADHD page or download their free 7 Types of ADD eBook.
Is the 7-type model accepted by mainstream psychiatry?
It is not the same as the DSM-5 diagnostic system. Amen's model is a clinical, brain-based framework based on SPECT imaging and large patient datasets. Many people find it useful as a supplement to standard diagnosis, not a replacement for medical assessment.
Do you diagnose ADHD at Find Your Inner Peace Ltd?
No. We are coaches and nervous-system regulation specialists. We support people before, during and after formal diagnosis. If you suspect ADHD, we can signpost you to a qualified assessor.
Can you support all seven types?
Yes. We do not use the types rigidly, but we use them to tailor the tools, coaching language and environment so the support fits the person. Each profile gets a different mix of regulation, structure, anxiety management and coaching.
What if I am not sure which type fits me?
That is normal. Most people have a mix of traits. We start with a free discovery call, map your current challenges and strengths, and build a plan from there. You can also try Amen's quiz for a starting point.
Do you offer programmes for groups or organisations?
Yes. We run schools, higher education, corporate and CPD training programmes, all of which can be adapted to ADHD profiles and neurodivergent needs.
